I would like to say a huge thank you to Milly Reid and Doubleday for allowing me to read and review this marvellous and heartwarming book about the power of friendships and that it’s never too late to find friends even when we are nearing the end. I would also like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful author Ericka Walker, creating such endearing characters such as Birdie, Connie, Jane, Ada, Frankie and Min. With other side characters that are just as important to the story in the way that they affect and give meaning to the main characters life. Intrigued? Let’s head over to the blurb to find out more.

Great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget……

Birdie Greenwing has been at a loose end ever since her beloved twin sister and husband passed away. Too proud and stubborn to admit she’s lonely, Birdie’s world view has shrunk. But then some new neighbours move in next door.

Jane has come to Brighton for a fresh start, away from her ferociously protective mother Min. While Jane finds it hard to stand up for herself, her daughter Frankie has no problem telling people what she does and doesn’t want. Ada Kowalski has come to England to follow her dreams, but her new life is harder than she expected .

When a series of incidents brings their lives crashing together, the three find that there is always more to a person than meets the eye…….

I am not sure what I expected from reading this book, but what I can say now is that I was swept away and had my heart broken and then slowly but surely put back together again. It’s emotional and endearing and one that will leave you smiling through your tears. The characters are just wonderful, Frankie is by far my favourite, she speaks whatever she thinks regardless of whether it’s too blunt or too on the nose and most of the time what she says gets to the heart of what’s going on even if it could have been said in a more gentle way. Birdie is one character that you also feel comfort and want to hold on to, there’s something so sad when you see someone alone trying to get through their days and yet they want someone to talk to but can’t find the words to ask for help because they don’t want to seem a nuisance or a pain. And this is where Frankie comes into her own, these two start to open up to each other which gives Birdie a little lease on life. Jane also tries to help as they live next door, but feels she would get in the way of Frankie’s friendship.

There’s also Ada, a doctor who’s come over from Poland to realise her dream of helping people, and though she has a good job finds it incredibly difficult to assimilate as she deals with pangs of homesickness, anxiety of being a good daughter to her family back home and how do you care for and help people when they are given the worst news, until she gets a new assistant and her life starts to tie together.

All these characters become entangled and intertwined with one another through a series of events and it brings them all closer, with a highly protective mother and an estranged sister all these characters bring life, love and chaos to a little part of Brighton. There are so many twists in this beautiful novel that keep you gasping, laughing, crying and feeling so happy.

I would highly recommend this lovely and heartwarming book to anyone.
