I would also like to say a huge thank you to Orenda Books (Karen Sullivan) for allowing me to read a digital copy of this marvellously gripping book and damnit you got me again!!! If I could I would sell my soul to Orenda just to acquire these wonderful books. Lastly and by no means least I would like to say a huge thank you to the creative genius or mastermind, Johanna Gustawsson in creating such a chilling, creepy and thrilling book which deals with bullying, sexual assault, psychosis and grief and loss. This is not just about witches, cults or ghouls.. it’s about loss of control and wanting more than they have. Intrigued? Let’s head over to the blurb and find out a bit more.

Three women

Three eras

One extraordinary mystery…..

1899. Belle Époque Paris.

Lucienne’s two daughters are believed dead when her mansion burns to the ground, but she is certain that her girls are still alive and embarks on a journey into the depths of the spiritualist community to find them.

1949. Post-War Quebec.

Teenager Lina’s father has died in the French Resistance, and as she struggles to fit in at school, her mother introduces her to an elderly woman at the asylum where she works, changing Lina’s life in the darkest way imaginable.

2002. Quebec.

A former school teacher is accused of brutally stabbing her husband – a famous university professor – to death. Detective Maxine Grant, who has recently lost her own husband and is parenting a teenager and a new baby single-handedly, takes on the investigation.

Under enormous personal pressure, Maxine makes a series of macabre discoveries that link directly to historical cases involving black magic and murder, secret societies and spiritism…. and women at breaking point, who will stop at nothing to protect the ones they love….

As soon as I (digitally) turned the pages, I knew I was in for one creepy, chilling and enthralling ride. I found the tale of three generations of women are connected by a feeling of loss, anger and either protecting themselves from others hurt or ones they love. We follow a mothers uncontrollable grief in losing her children and believing that they are alive somewhere and using the new fad at the time… spiritualism to help her find them.

We then have a young girl, a teenager who has been bullied for her different ways until she meets another of the older residences who shows her a secret and which takes her on a disturbing and dark path. Then we follow a police officer who’s family life has been thrown into turmoil, grieving for the death of her husband and having to single handedly look after a teenager and a young baby, then a case appears that focuses her on path that could be redemption or find out all their secrets.

This was such a masterpiece of a story, I was hooked line and sinker into working out how and why all these people were connected and I gradually felt a dawning sense of horror as I realised why. Seriously it was like getting goosebumps downs your arm it was that gradual and creepy. I loved the tense atmosphere in each little snippet of time as you the reader see it all laid out for you to follow like crumbs to mark your way out from a dark wood. I found the characters both disturbing and yet also human, they are women feeling abused, unloved and shunned by the people that should be loving them and showing them sympathy and understanding. This was such a brilliant read and perfect for anyone who loves a creepy, tense and atmospheric thriller that also has a witchy vibe to it.

Though I won’t spoil any part of this twisted and disturbing book, I just have to mention that the ending is one which leaves you feeling awe at the way the author has managed to tidy everything together and how you as the reader are only aware near the end you never really get it all but you see the whole picture and it just blows your mind. I would highly recommend you get hold of this beautiful and spooky book.

Ratings: 5 🌟s with a large ☕️ and a large 🍰 ( a perfect accompaniment to this book… and one where you might find yourself surrounded by empty mugs and crumbs of devastation after you have finished this book)

I will also introduce the translator too, as their hard work has meant we get to read these gems.

David Warner translates from French and nurtures a healthy passion for Franco, Nordic and British crime fiction. Growing up in deepest Yorkshire, he developed incurable Francophilia at an early age. Emerging from Oxford with a Modern Languages degree he narrowly escaped the graduate rat race by hopping on a plane to Canada – and never looked back. More than a decade into a high-powered commercial translation career, he listened to his heart and turned his hand to the delicate art of literary translation. David has lived in France and Quebec, and now calls beautiful British Columbia home.

I hope you have enjoyed this haunting, chilling, creepy, dark and disturbing look into people’s madness of grief, anger and a desperation to be noticed. If you are wanting to grab a copy for yourself you can pre-order now or you can wait till publication and grab a copy in Waterstones, any independent stores and of course on Amazon. I will leave you now to say Happy Reading and see you all soon!!!
